But now, good news comes to all of us, there is a new luxury transportation way between Hanoi and Halong Bay – by helicopter transfer.1

Upon booking this helicopter service from Cruises Company, you will be picked up by a private luxury car at your hotel in Hanoi, and then escorted to Gia Lam Heliport in the heart of the city. Only 45 minutes needed for a flight from the Capital to Halong Bay, along which you have chance to seize breathtaking vistas of the natural beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cheap International Flights To Vietnam – Part 1

  1. AirAsia

AirAsia is an international airline having head quarter in Malaysia. This firm operates daily flights to three big cities in Vietnam including Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.

Bhaya Halong Cruises - Cheap Flights to Vietnam

Air Asia

To specify, AirAsia provides flight from Hanoi to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and fly-thru to Perth and Gold Coast (Australia). From Ho Chi Minh city, guests could choose direct flight to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Jakartar and fly-thru to Perth, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney.  There is only one AirAsia direct flight from Da Nang to Kuala Lumpur.

AirAsia is famous for a tense Asia flights network and many super annual sale-off campaigns (at least 4 times a year) with the prices only $5 to $10 for a one-way flight. Particularly, AirAsia four years in a row was recognized as the best cheap-airlines world-wide.

  1. Tiger Airways

This is a well-known airline from Singapore, operating direct flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City every day.

Tiger Airways

From Hanoi, there are Tiger Airways flights to Singapore and connecting flights to Hyperadat (India). From Ho Chi Minh, travelers could choose either direct flight to Singapore or connecting flights to Hyberadat (India) and Perth (Australia).

Tiger Airways often offers very cheap price for flights to Vietnam (usually $18-$22 for HCMC-Singapore flight and $50 for Hanoi-Singapore flight).

The most frustrating thing is found in the booking online system of this firm. Usually online purchasers are forced to immediately fill in the passport number while many of them have not obtained a passport yet.

Three Most Popular Domestic Airlines in Vietnam

  1. Vietnam Airlines

This is the biggest national airline in the country with the widest range of domestic airline routes. Passengers could search for Vietnam Airlines flights to all Vietnam destinations that have airports, especially Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City route (and vice versa) and does up to 20 flights per day. This is the only airlines as well that does flights to other minor provinces in Vietnam.

Running in a traditional model, Vietnam Airlines allows each passenger free 20 kg luggage on the aircraft and also offers travelers with free meal and beverage during their trip. Another advantage of this firm is their powerful fleet with large and modern facility aircrafts namely Boeing 777, Airbus 330, Airbus 320/321, to name a few.

However, with above advantages over other firms, Vietnam Airline’s flight tickets are usually more expensive than those of the later. Despite some discount events are launched each year, Vietnam Airlines’ ticket price is assessed to be the highest.

  1. Jetstar Pacific

Jetstar, the second biggest airline firm in Vietnam, is well known for its cheap-price tickets. The price of Jetstar tickets are not only usually cheaper than that of Vietnam Airlines (for the same route), but this company also often offer weekly discount days (Friday as usual) which attracts thousands of customers.

Nevertheless, the choice when travelling by Jetstar is also limited since this firm mainly operates in Hanoi/HaiPhong-Ho Chi Minh City routes and Hanoi-Danang/Nha Trang in the summer time. Though the old conditions of the aircrafts and facilities of Jetstar airlines are sometimes complained about by many passengers, these people still remain satisfied because the price itself in general fulfills their expectations.

  1. Vietjet Air

Newly operated in Vietnam since 2011, Vietjet Air has promptly grown to be a powerful competitor of Jestar Pacific. Vietjet Air is known as an airline firm for every Vietnamese people thanks to its cheap price and regular super discount offers which sell tickets as cheap as a bus ride for the same routes.

When flying with Vietjet Air, one would feel secured due to the hospitality and nice attitude of the well-trained airhostesses. However, we advise that you should always prepare for delays or cancellations of any of your trips because they are known for being the “Sorry Airlines”.

Just one more note: If you choose to travel by low cost airline firms and want to bring along further luggage, it is compulsory that you purchase the luggage allowance.

For people affected by seasickness, you should travel to Halong bay anyway, and try to go onboard the Halong Bay junks if possible.

On a trip to Halong Bay, one of the most popular activity is the visit of a floating village. It’s a “must see” on any Halong Bay junks. That is why most of the Halong tour operators will include this visit in their package.

Vung Vieng Floating Village

Vung Vieng Floating Village

There are 4 villages accessible on a Halong Bay cruise, gathering a total population of around 250 residents, with nearly 30% of children. Fishing is their main source of income, men goes to the mainland to sell the big catches while keeping the little ones, to feed them until they get bigger and sell them later on.

The visit of the village is organized on a sampan, driven by a woman as men are fishing. This very charming tour to Halong Bay usually includes the visit of the local school and the community floating home. Tourists are welcome to bring some scholar furniture and will definitely a very warm smile in return.

Don’t forget to tip your driver as well, and try out to drive the basket boat yourself, it is way more difficult than it seems and will be great fun for your partners. Halong Bay cruises actually became an important source of income as well.

Villagers in Vung Vieng Fishing Village

Unfortunately, those villages tend to disappear as the local authority wants to relocate them on the land, to ensure their security during the violent summer storms, and also to limit their rapid expansion and the environment risk linked to it.

According to travelers’ opinion, meeting the local population of these villages is one of the best moments of their travel to Halong Bay during their cruise tour.

Planning a trip to Vietnam? Be prepared to face the crowd because you won’t be the only one in town!

And I am not only talking about the locals, trying to sell you tens of trinkets around the inevitable tourist areas, but also mates of your own country.

This past decade saw tourism becoming one of the pillars of the Vietnamese economy. International arrivals went from 2.1 million in 2000 to 6.8 million in 2012.

If you wish to avoid the almost-24h big cities hustle, you should definitely take a trip to Halong Bay, the Mekong Delta or Hue to enjoy a lovey, quiet, relaxing cruise…

Here are the top 3 cruising destinations in Vietnam:

No matter the weather, a Halong Bay cruise is unforgettable. If it’s cloudy, the view from a Halong Bay junks is unreal, and if it’s sunny, well, don’t forget your board shorts because a tour to Halong Bay usually implies water activities.

Mekong Delta

Mekong cruises offers are similar to Halong cruises, except for the water, which is a river instead of a sea. Different locations, different scenery, different trip! From Ho Chi Minh, you can actually sail up to Cambodia.

Unlike the Mekong and Halong cruise tours, Hue offers a short 22 kilometers quiet journey on the Huong River. It’s a perfect point of view to have a look at the Vietnamese casual life around the river.

Vietnam is located in the Torrid Zone. Thus, it is impossible to describe “Vietnamese climate” at once: it goes from glacial winters in Northern Mountains, to continuous heat in the Mekong Delta.

Upfront, there aren’t any bad months for a tour to Halong Bay.  Halong cruises deserve many beautiful and different surprising types of scenery each time of the year.

Let’s focus on the North. Meteorologists, blogs and websites will tell you Vietnam is rhythmed by two seasons: spring and winter monsoons. Vietnamese, however, will tell you there are four seasons in the North. And they are right.

The winter monsoon brings cold and humidity to all regions above Nha Trang, while spring monsoon comes with heat and humidity, (except for areas sheltered by mountains).

February and March usually have persistent, light and drizzling rain. It doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy your Halong Bay cruise, scenery tends to become unreal, mystical, with a morning fog that transforms the bay in a ghost sea town.
